June 2005
Summer is in full swing and of course Grant is at his happiest time of the year.
Summer means endless hours of water parks and swimming for Grant. Despite the
recent June gloom Grant has already made several trips to Wild Rivers and Soak
City. Besides water parks, Grant is a big fan of Disneyland and Knott's Berry
Farm. Grant is already getting for an action packed summer. By the end of summer
Grant will have golden brown skin and blond hair, looking like a real Huntington
Beach surfer!
In the fall Grant will return to Perry School as a 4th grade student. He will
continue to work on the computer and augmentative communication devices
accessing them through a single switch. Grant will also be learning how to use a
page turner so that he can follow along while he is listening to books on tape.
Grant will also learn how make choices using eye gaze. This will give Grant the
opportunity to choose his preferred activities, pick a classmate with whom to
play, or lead the class in a selected task. Grant continues to make social
gains. Over the past few years, Grant has increased his tolerance for his
wheelchair and his patience to sit through activities he may not like. Grant has
made many friends over his years at Perry School and we certainly appreciate
everyone's efforts to include Grant in the classroom and throughout the school
campus.

September 2004
Grant
(10) is a fully-included third grader this year. He returned to Perry
School where he has developed some nice friendships. Grant has done so well
attending school with his typical peers. He loves all of the attention that his
classmates give him throughout the day. We have also had many parents of Grant's
classmates tell us how Grant has touched their hearts and the hearts of their
children.
Despite his multiple
and severe disabilities Grant is very much an important member of the Perry
School campus. We have to thank the terrific staff at Perry School who have not
only accepted Grant, but they have included him in every aspect of the Perry
campus activity. Because the adults have been so open to Grant and his unique
needs, the Perry students have followed suit. We strongly believe that this
positive and stimulating environment has allowed Grant to not only maximize his
cognitive and social potential but also to maintain his physical health. Jim and
I, as well as Grant, could not be happier.
Grant
spent the entire summer at the pool and the water parks. He swam till he
dropped! Grant's favorite place in the whole world is Wild Rivers in Irvine,
California. He would float down the "Lazy River" everyday if given a choice. We
can't even mention the name "Wild Rivers" in front of Grant or even drive in the
direction of the water park unless we plan on going there.
Because
Grant is a quadriplegic and requires full support and assistance in the water,
the administration at Wild Rivers have been so generous to supply us will season
passes for anyone who helps Grant at the park. This donation has allowed Grant
to hang out at the park almost every day. So, don't be surprised if you run into
a very happy and tan, blond-haired little boy floating down the "Lazy River" in
an inner tube next time you are visiting Wild Rivers!.
Grant
will continue to swim even in the winter. We are lucky to have a heated indoor
pool at the Huntington Beach City Gym which Grant has access to twice a week.
Not only is getting in this heated pool very therapeutic, Grant just loves to
be in the water with his big brothers who splash around and play with him.
