June 2005
Javier (12) has nearly completed his first year of middle school.  Javier had a great year as a 6th grader.  He started middle school with many friends he knew from elementary school.  Over the year Javier has made even more friends, many of whom hang out with Javier after school too.  I am afraid that some of his brothers were pretty jealous though when they noticed many, many of the girls making a point to say "hello!" to Javier throughout the school day.

Although all of our middle school boys are very active in the extra curricular school activities offered, Javier was the first to dance with a girl during the school wide dances!  Javier continues to make progress academically and this year he even began taking music lessons after school three times a week.  Javier is learning how to read music and play the baritone horn.  Javier, Jeffrey and Alin have been working together to improve their musical skills.

Jim and I are amazed how well the boys worked together this entire school year, we have never had to ask them to practice.  They have really shown their dedication to learn how to play their individual instruments. This summer Javier is looking forward to attending several camp programs and hanging out with his friends.

June 2004 Javier graduated from elementary school and begins middle school in September. Javier is a fully-included sixth grade student at Sowers Middle School. Javier is excited that his new brothers, Ivan and Val will also be sixth graders at Sowers Middle School as well. Javier promises to help them learn to speak English. Javier has done so well academically over the past years. In fact, every year Javier's academic skills improve beyond any of the professional's expectations. Javier's teacher last year reported that "Javier is a motivated student who always tries his best." We certainly are proud of Javier's accomplishments and believe that much of his success is based on Javier consistent inclusion with his typical peers. Despite his significant physical and developmental disabilities, Javier has always been fully-included in his neighborhood school. To this end, Javier has many friends who remain in touch with him throughout the year. Javier is also a very independent pre-teen who does not let his disability interfere with his life.

Javier continues to be a member of the Golden West Swim Team. Javier loves the program and is really improving in his water safety and swimming skills.   Javier is also involved with children's theater and the Science Adventures Club.
