November 2005
Val continues to enjoy school. He is a part of the Sowers Middle School Yearbook production team. Val enjoys taking pictures and is becoming quite a good photographer. In school continues to excel in math and make great strides in English. After school Val is on a basketball team. They have just begun practicing together and Val is looking forward to starting to play some games. Val has also been learning how to roller blade and skate board.

September 2005
Val is delighted to be back in school. He is especially proud to be one of only a few 7th graders in an 8th grade math class! Val's English skills have really advanced as well. He is a very motivated student and we are looking forward to watching Val make continued academic and social progress throughout this new school year.

Val had a great summer. This was his first full summer in America. With his super sun tan and his long blond hair, Val sure looks like he has lived in Huntington Beach his whole life. During the last two weeks of summer Val learned how to surf. He even received the "Waver of the Week" award on the final week at Surf Camp. Apparently he and Alex Daniel spent the entire six hours each day at camp in the ocean. Both Val and Alex Daniel are now quite good surfers and hope to join the surf team at Sowers Middle School.

June 2005
Val is officially a 7th grader now! Its hard to believe he is in the middle year of middle school! Emotionally, Val has grown up so much this year. Academically Val has made great gains too, especially in math. Even the photos show a big difference in his physical appearance since he arrived from Russia a little less than a year ago. Val almost doesn't look like a shy and studious Harry Potter anymore, we think he looks more like an athletic and active Southern Californian skateboarder now.

Val has been a great help lately. He is really supportive of Alex Daniel's transition to middle school. Val has taken the time to introduce Alex Daniel to his friends and to show Alex Daniel around the campus. Watching Val with his new brother we can see much he has matured so much since he joined our family last year.

Val is getting ready for a summer full of camp programs. Val will be participating in four weeks of Junior Lifeguard Program. Val is excited that his swimming skills have improved enough to be in the lifeguard program.

He will also learn to surf along with Alex Daniel while they participate in two weeks of Surfing Camp.

Finally, Val will spend a week at Sports Camp where he will focus his days on improving his skills in his favorite sport, basketball. We think that by the end of summer Val will be so tan and muscular no one at school will recognize him!

Shapes

Chorus:
Geometry is fun, with its angles and its shapes
Geometry is fun, I think it’s really great
Geometry is fun

To find the area of a triangle
Here’s what you do
Multiply the base and height together
Then divide what you get by two

(Repeat Chorus)

They say the circle is a perfect
We can find the area if we try
Multiply the radius by itself
Then multiply that number by pi

Bridge:
Next to math I like like sports best of all
With geometry I can find the volume of the ball

(Repeat Chorus)

We can find the volume of a cone
It’s not too hard if we dare
Multiply the height by one-third, and by pi
Then multiply the radius squared

(Repeat Chorus)

To Play A Better Game
Val Silcock & Dave Nachmanoff
June 2, 2005

Just a year ago, I was not that good at all
I practiced by myself, always playing basketball
But I met a friend who helped me
He taught me how to shoot
Now even from the half court
I can swish it through the hoop

Chorus:
Practicing alone is just not the same
Working together, we play a better game

Just a few months later, I joined up with a team
Out there on the court, it was almost like dream
Just like on the Lakers
We have players from every land
We may speak different languages
But we all understand

(Repeat Chorus)

Now I help my brother
Just like my friend helped me
He always wants to shoot
But I say passing is the key
Now I ride my bike
With a basketball in tow
Finding friends to play with
Everywhere I go

(Repeat Chorus)

Val (12) has been home for two weeks now!  It is hard to tell he hasn't lived in California his whole life.  Almost every time we see Val he has his board shorts on and is carrying his basketball.  Val could play basketball all day and will stop to ask anyone to play basketball with him---although his favorite one-on-one basketball games are with his Grandpa Jim!  Val also loves visiting his grandparents' house and asks to go for a visit everyday.  Val will start as a 6th grader at Sowers Middle School on September 7th.

JULY 2004:  Val was adopted on July 19th in Moscow and is now officially a member of the Silcock family.  Due to his multiple medical needs Val has spent most of his life living in Russian orphanages or hospitals.  He has wanted to have his own family forever.  Luckily Val has had many charity groups supporting him and searching for an adoptive family.  We feel blessed to have been selected to be Val's forever family.

Between trips to Russia we were able to write daily e-mails to the boys.  It was great that the orphanage staff translated these e-mails.  The daily contact allowed us all to get to know each other.  It also helped the time pass quicker as we waited to bring the boys home.  Here is one of Val's e-mails...

Dear Mom

How are you? I am fine

It is great that we will take boat trip. And Vanya- will he be able to climb the ship? Who will translate for us? I will take all the addresses for my friends. I am so happy that you are happy that I have friends! Yesterday one boy here - Rustam - had his birthday. Today, I will visit my friend Petya again. He is a maths scientist and he is 25. I know him for 7 years already. Is it hot in Mexico now? The trip - what it will be? Two days to there , 1 day there and 2 days back? Or 1 day each way and 3 days there?

Do you think it is better we will choose things ourselves? I would like to go with Grandma Sue and choose things for myself if that could be possible? But I am so thankful to my granny and to you for you are so caring!

It is very hot and sometimes very rainy in Moscow now. Are there real live pirates in Las Vegas? I will fight with them! Yesterday I read Vanya the letter you sent. He was very happy. Today his grandma Gayla will take a reply from him.

Thank you so much!
With big love
I miss you a lot
It is 5 days left and it is so loong tiime!!

With love

Val in Russia

In 2004 year Val was featured in the Moscow Times.  He won a look-a-like contest for the characters in the Harry Potter series!  This was the first picture we ever saw of Val.  Until we actually met him in person we thought he hair was black!  Later he laughed while he explained that his hair was dyed for the contest!

Russian Harry Potter lookalike contest
Written by Matthew at 8:17 PM, 02-10-04 - 1 comments
Russian children took part in a Harry Potter lookalike contest following the exciting release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in Russian.

The child that won as Harry, Valera Ashcheulov, is an orphan. Born with a serious congenital urological problem, Valera was abandoned at birth by his parents, who simply told his two siblings that he had died.
